There must be no barbed wire anywhere around the foal's surroundings.Strong, safe fencing of various kinds, about 5’ high, is acceptable. No electric wire or tape, until the foal become accustomed to its surroundings. There must be fresh water available, and a shelter.This will be addressed at the site inspection.Size may vary, although the pen needs to be a reasonable size to be able to work with the foal, not too big, and not too small. What are the responsibilities of the foster home?
The foster home is responsible for normal maintenance of the foal.Feeding, watering, deworming, farrier work and training are all part of the responsibilities.Veterinary expenses may be reimbursed by NHER, depending on circumstances.Normally, the foster home will be responsible for vet expenses also.These services are provided by the foster home as a donation.
Is the foal still available for adoption while being fostered?
Yes.The foster home agrees to cooperate with NHER in allowing potential adopters to come visit and handle the foal. The foal remains the property of NHER until an adoption agreement is signed, and the probationary period completed.
Can the foster home decide to adopt the foal? Yes. Just let your contact person at NHER know, and fill out the adoption application. I have other horses, can’t I just put the foal in with them?
No.The foal is not big enough to defend itself against other horses.Also, the foal must be quarantined for 30 days before being put in with any horse the same age and size. Introduction of the foal to other horses must be done carefully and gradually. How long do I foster the foal?
The foster home may foster until the foal is rehomed to a permanent home.There is no definite timeline.However, if for some reason the foster home become unable to continue to foster, then NHER will make arrangements to remove the foal.
